Program History

In 1997, Jill and Lorenzo Muti, with the support of seven independent schools and private funding from both the United States and Italy, created SPOLETO STUDY ABROAD, a non-profit educational organization.  Its purpose is to enrich professional development opportunities for teachers, school administrators and interested adults through exposure to the historical, architectural, and cultural riches of the Italian arts and humanities with yearly tours to various regions in Italy.  In 1998, a four-week summer session for high school students was launched.  Over the last nine years, the two distinct programs have enjoyed continued success and have grown significantly.  The number of independent schools in the consortium has more than doubled from seven to fifteen.  A Board of Directors, comprised of Heads of School or designated delegates from their schools, governs the organization.
A 10-day enrichment tour through Umbria, Lazio, and Tuscany for educators and adults interested in the arts and humanities.
Adult and faculty enrichment in Venice and the surrounding areas of the Veneto, including the spectacular Brenta River.
A month-long, intensive interdisciplinary program focusing on the arts and humanities offering students ages 15-19, interested in vocal and instrumental music, creative writing, visual arts, photography, film and drama*, the opportunity to explore their academic and artistic interests through exposure to an integrated style of learning in a unique European setting.
