Dance

The Spoleto Study Abroad Dance program offered this summer includes instruction in Ballet, Modern, and Jazz dance. The student will learn choreographic pieces that will be performed in various presentations. The program will utilize these dance forms in a comprehensive exploration of Choreographic Principles. The students will learn and perform existing pieces, as well as have the opportunity to create their own original work for presentations. The theatrical component of storytelling will also be utilized, in order for the students to enhance the storyline of the pieces they perform. Some original dance work will be performed to live music, providing the collaborative opportunity between musicians and dancers attending the summer program.

The objective of this program is to weave the rich culture and stories of Italy into the original work of the students. History and traditions depicted in art through artists such as Michelangelo, Signorelli, and Zocchi, will be used in the choreographic process. Integrating the rich history of Italy into choreographic work, as well as collaborating with musicians in the program, will provide the opportunity for students to experience the collaborative process of a professional performer.

Dancers are asked to bring the following:

  1. Black dance pants and black short sleeve t- shirt - no logos, no spaghetti straps. These will be used for performance. Also, jeans (no holes in jeans) and white t shirts (no logos) again for performance.
Note: Men, the black pants can be just a light weight black casual pant, as long as it is not really baggy.
  2. Clothes to work out in during dance classes and rehearsals. Clothing should be comfortable but with no excessive bagginess. Ladies, if you have a rehearsal skirt (below the knee) and ballet skirt, please bring them.
  3. Black Jazz shoes, men and women. (Men, you can also use a light weight tennis shoe like a converse if you can't get Jazz shoes. If you use them, black is preferred) pink ballet and or point shoes ( if you have point shoes) and tennis Converse shoes (or look-alike Converse tennis shoes - these would be for performance so not an athletic shoe like Nike).
