Creative Writing

Creative Writing is not being offered during the 2008 Summer Sessions.

Creative Writing Workshop
Because writing, rightly understood, is primarily a discipline of attention, workshop students will participate in activities devised to hone their powers of observation.  Daily writing exercises, including formal and technical considerations of craft, will engage the writers' senses, encouraging them to render in words the immediacy of fully felt experience.  Students will be invited to present their works-in-progress for critique by the workshop on a regular basis, in a collaborative effort to become more attentive and articulate writers. This is a required course for all creative writing students.
  Creative Writing Seminar
"Being Here: The Poet's Perspective"
Poets are, arguably, the best of tour guides, because it is their calling to see more clearly and more penetratingly than the rest of us, and to articulate those perceptions with the utmost cogency.  We, by reading and discussing their works, can take advantage of the poets' generous guidance and draw upon their insights to deepen our own experience of this rich and resonant world.  In this seminar, we will examine texts in prose and verse by both native and visiting poets from Dante to Brodsky, aspiring to learn from them that intimate understanding of the Italian landscape, culture, peoples and persuasions which only poets can reveal to us.  This is a required course for all creative writing students.
